Home based businesses

You've seen it in the newspaper. As your channel surfing you come across the infomercial. You're driving in your car with the radio on and there it is again. You hop on the internet, and you stumble across another one. Work from Home opportunities. They offer testimonies of how a person who was in debt became a multimillionaire overnight, but can they be trusted?

Your first reaction is to think scam. But as you continue to get bombarded doubt seeps into your mind, "Could these be legit?" The notion of working from home begins to nag at you. You have resisted starting your own home business for a variety of reasons, but with the current economy maybe its time to reshape your career, maybe its time for you to get some security, for you, and your family. Maybe it is time to look into a home business. But where do you start?

That's where I was at two years ago. Tired of my job, wanting more for my family, and hoping that there was something out there that could help me in my quest for change. Unfortunately, my zeal to become independent made me vulnerable to those get rich quick schemes. My dad use to tell me that "if you by a $10,000 diamond ring for one dollar, chances are you have a ring that is not worth a dollar." I had seemed to forget that lesson.
The good news is that a home-based business can be very lucrative. You can set your own hours, which gives you the flexibility to spend time with your children, your spouse, or time to pursue a private passion. Plus, the profits are virtually limitless as long as you put forth the effort in a well informed manner. Starting a home-based business can be the best life choice you have ever made.

Home based businesses come in a variety of forms from stock investing to Internet marketing. You could create an online home-based business built around what you are passionate about. This is where you need to be careful, while you are passionate about your business you need to be level headed about the way you go about starting your business. Why? The sad truth is that many of the 'Work from Home' opportunities you see on the on the internet, TV, newspaper, and hear on the radio are scams.

We have been taught since a kid to expect people to be honest and have our best interests at heart. This couldn't be farther from the truth for most of these programs. The fraudulent businesses prey upon our emotions and drain our bank account. I know people that have lost their precious savings because of poor judgment. I lost quite a bit. There are three main areas that you need to check into before starting your own internet business.

The first, and most important check you need to make, and make it seriously is, "Is this too good to be true?" Bottom line, following my dads' philosophy, use common sense. Remember, companies always advertise their best successes. Those overnight millionaires are very rare. Make sure that the companies give you realistic expectations.

Secondly, what are your expectations? Are they realistic? Do I fully understand what it's going to take to make it happen? I often tell my kids that "if it was easy, everyone would do it." Running your own internet home business is a challenge, it's not easy, it requires work. If you are expecting to spend an hour a day, to make millions, its not going to happen in the beginning of your company. Expect to spend initially significant time to get yourself up and running on your new business .

Third, do your homework. There are a lot of great resources to help you out. The internet is filled with resources. Take the time to research. Find people who have used the systems and talk to them. Ask the unpopular questions, "how many times did you fail before you succeeded?" Ask what they did right, and what they would do differently.

So here we are, February of 2009. Bailouts being thrown around, people saying the American Dream is dead, excuses being made as to how we got here and whose fault it is. It is very easy to get sucked into these discussions. Very easy to feel sorry for yourself and the position you are in. Very easy to live with the status quo, live scared, and not take the risk. Internet based businesses are the future. They give you a world wide clientele. They are the future.

The final check you need to ask yourself before you start an internet business is a question I always ask my kids, and it sums up whether or not you will make it in an internet business. The question is "What do you want and what are you willing to do to get it?"
